2016 Nissan Titan XD gear issue

I was out hauling lumber in my 2016 Titan XD and it wouldn't shift past third even after restarting. Could low trans fluid be the cause or is something electronic acting up?

When you mention valve body problems, are you referring to the electronic control components or the hydraulic parts? Also, if the transmission is failing rather than just having low fluid, what's the typical timeline for replacement? Are we looking at days or weeks to get it fixed? I'm trying to plan around having the truck down since I use it for work hauling.

Did you notice if you had any engine lights on?
The XD transmission is pretty smart, and a sensor issue can definitely cause it to go into a limp mode where it won't shift past a certain gear to protect itself.
The same could happen with a valve body acting up, just like @Strata4 suggested.
So yeah, a low fluid level could still be a factor, but a bad valve body can also be a root cause but that's a bigger and more expensive fix.
Anyway, I'd start with checking the fluid first and make sure to follow the correct procedure in the manual since it's a bit specific.
If that's good, then try getting a code reader on it.
That will tell you exactly what the transmission or engine computer is seeing and save you a lot of guesswork!

I'm concerned that both of you mentioned the valve body, which makes me think this is a common issue with these trucks. I'm worried that if it's a frequent problem, it could mean the transmission may need extensive repairs. The check engine light did come on when the problem started, so your explanation of 'limp mode' really helps. I'll get the codes pulled this week as you suggested. Once I have them, is there a good online resource for determining what they mean in this context?
